SBWC in the Schools
Creative Writing Program for Students
Santa Barbara Writers Conference in the Schools is a new after-school creative writing program for interested high school students in Santa Barbara and Goleta Valley.
The once-a-week classes will be taught by instructors from the 37-year-old Santa Barbara Writers Conference, the nation’s premier conference for established and beginning writers alike. Every June, nearly 500 writers from around the world gather for a week of craft workshops, speakers and networking with publishing industry professionals.
Beginning in October, students from Santa Barbara, San Marcos and Dos Pueblos high schools will spend six weeks with seasoned SBWC teachers and authors, exploring their own interests in written creative expression. The classes are open to all students and there are no requirements to participate. Next spring, we hope to expand the program to Carpinteria High School and the junior highs in Santa Barbara and Goleta.
The program will be funded by donors and with help from Barnes and Noble Booksellers in downtown Santa Barbara, which will host a Bookfair [pdf] benefiting the program Oct. 17-19. A percentage of all sales at the store for those three days will go toward the SBWC in the Schools program, so bring all your friends and Buy a Book for Literacy!
If you have a student interested in participating, contact your high school English Department, call us at (805) 964-0367 or e-mail and we’ll tell you how to get involved.
